DinoBoy's Chinese Book Recommendation #1 春华童书·“大头儿子”系列 - 总是有办法

Note :  This is not a sponsored post.  DinoBoy's Chinese language standard is not as great as I wanted him to be nor is it as good as his English language.  Since he started his primary school journey I have pushed doubly hard on introducing more Chinese story books to him and ensuring that he read much more Chinese story books than before.  Since many parents have voiced out that their kids are struggling with the language, I thought I'd share the books that I exposed DinoBoy to since day one in primary school. I hope these books will help parents choose the ones that are suitable for their kids' reading level and eventually help them conquer Chinese.

I love how our library try to introduce books to patrons in a convenient way.  For my neghbourhood's library there is this shelf near the Borrowing Station where they will place books of different genre for both adults and kids.  Couple of months ago while DinoBoy was busy checking out the books at the Borrowing Station I was browsing at the Recommendations shelf and saw this book. I took it up to check it out and it ended into our pile of books that we borrowed that night.

Ok I admit that I'm a visual creature, its in the blood not my fault, anyway as I flipped the pages and admiring the illustrations I get more exited.  The illustrations are so whimsical, lifelike and full of facial expressions that depicts the character's mood in the story.  These are the kind of illustrations that I like because it draws me to not only read the book but study the characters while reading the story.

And since DinoBoy is some what a visual creature too, again through no fault of mine lol, I noticed that illustrations help him to get connected to the story because he still have trouble recognizing some Chinese characters and understanding their meaning.

Anyway, another reason why I like this book is because it consist of short stories (max 4 pages) of interesting title but with simple and lively story line, the words the author used are easy to understand too.

The characters has no name, instead they have nicknames; 大头儿子 Big Head Son, 小头爸爸 Small Head Dad, 大大叔 Big Big Uncle.小眼睛 Small Eyes and 胖外婆 Plump Grandma etc. DinoBoy finds their name very funny and wants to read more about their story.

With the help of the hanyupinyin above each words, DinoBoy was able to pronounce the new words he encountered while reading, after that I will either explain to him the meaning of the words or he will look up in the Chinese dictionary later.  There are many idioms, adjectives and descriptive words in this book and by pronouncing it out himself and learning its meaning it some how helps to register them in DinoBoy's head.  Here's some examples;

她先倒一杯递给大头儿子,谁知小眼睛却又对着绿茶打起喷嚏 :啊嚏!啊嚏!弄得那位小姐进退两难。

The recommended age for this book as stated in dangdang is for 7 to 10 years old but it's a little bit challenging for DinoBoy for him to read alone, I have to read it out with him but he understands the story well.  If your child is good in Chinese he will definitely enjoy reading the many adventures Big Head son had with Small Eyes.

I googled about this book and found out that the author is from China and the characters are based on a typical China modern family.  There is another book to this "Big Head Son" or “大头儿子”series, its "我们一起哈哈笑".  This author has other series of books too, “米球球”系列, “卷毛头”系列, which you can easily find them from online shops such as dangdang or taobao by these words or  “春华童书” as keywords to search.

The Smurfs Live on Stage - Smurfs Save Spring!

Both DinoBoy and myself love the Smurfs, however we have different memories of these cute little blue fellows.

While DinoBoy knows them from the movie The Smurfs, the Mcdonald's Happy Meal Toys and a few books he could lay his hands on in the school, he probably does not know all about the smurfs or as much as I do (though he will pretend that he really knows MORE than me lol)

Smurfs was one of the many cartoons that I will watch when I was a little girl, it does not matter if the plot is almost the same every week, I just love to see this blue little creatures running around going through their daily responsibilities in the Smurf Village and collecting smurfberries while evading and outsmarting the evil wizard Gargamel and his cat Azrael.

Well, imagine our happiness when we got to know that the Smurfs are coming to Singapore for a live show, for the first time too!

Following the successful World Premiere in Dubai on 16 January 2015, THE SMURFS LIVE ON STAGE – SMURFS SAVE SPRING will be staged in Singapore from 12 to 14 June 2015 over the school holidays.

The evil wizard Gargamel and a team of puppeteers will accompany the tiny blue creatures in this ‘Smurftastic’ journey.

La La La Lalala! Sing a Happy Song!

The story is set in Spring – Smurfs’ favourite time of the year and they are busily preparing for the much-awaited Annual Spring Parade. But while the Smurfs make merry and sing and dance with excitement, the wicked Gargamel conjures up a plan to trick Mother Nature and bring an end to the fun and festivities. SMURFS SAVE SPRING is a magical tale that will see the Smurfs battle Gargamel and save Mother Nature, whilst promoting family values and the power of a true team spirit.

Little fans can get ready to cheer the SMURFS as they come to life on a grand stage, with life-size Smurf mushroom-shaped forest houses, vibrant backdrops and wonderful sing-along songs. La La La La La La…don’t miss THE SMURFS LIVE ON STAGE in their 90-minute show!

Crochet Baby Groot in Pot

Inspired by "Guardians of the Galaxy" and also after seeing the crochet pattern from Twinkie Chan, I decided to make the Baby Groot too!

I first made my Groot with a solid dark brown acrylic yarn which looks great but not as lively as I like.  The Groot looks a bit dull and I can't really see the big grin on his face so it was yarn hunting time after that.

Lucky for me, I managed to find King Cole Fashion yarn (30% Wool 70% Premium Acrylic) with tweed-effect shades. I wasn't sure about the effect it will turned out when I bought the skein but fell in love with it when I finished the Groot's head. The shades on the yarn makes the Groot looks more "alive", now I can see its big grin!

And to make him more real life like, I went to buy a super duper expensive packet of moss from Art Friend, I hot-gun glued them bit by bit using a tweezer onto the "dirt" in the pot.

The pot is 1/3 filled with plastic pebbles to create some weight so that it does not topple over easily.

Groot is sewn onto the pot thus it is not removable. It has pipe-cleaners in its arms and body I can bend it this way and that way to my liking.

So what do you think of my Groot?

He's cute to the max right?  Ok ok I am being so proud and not humble but I've never been so satisfied with my own creation.  This is up for pre-order in my etsy shop - Shop of Curios, takes about 2 weeks to finished it and mail it out either locally or overseas.

Follow my craft creations at my facebook page of the same name Shop of Curios over here where I constantly post snippets of my current projects and musing of the day while out yarn hunting or corcheting.

I am thinking of my next project now and this fella is a big hit with every one; both young and old.  Want to know the answer?  Head off to my crochet facebook page to check it out!

Momma Don't You Worry [Kindle Edition] - Book Review

About the Book

Title : Momma Don't You Worry [Kindle Edition]

Pages : 12
Recommended Age : 2 - 6
Summary : This illustrated books tells a poetic story from a six year old's viewpoint. His mother worries too much in his opinion, until they go on a shopping trip and he gets a real appreciation for just how right his mom is.
Excerpt :
She watches me with eagle eyes
Like I’m a treasured jewel
She cramps my style, oh man alive

My Review

Great read a loud book to younger kids to instill the good habits of always holding to Mum's or Dad's hand and be near them whenever they are outside.  It is really a very "dangerous world" out there for a young kid.  Through this book, the younger kids will know that even kids who are nearly 6 years old needs to always follow these rules too.

For the older kids who thinks like the boy in the book, this could serve as a reminder the importance of holding hands, it is more for safety reasons than to embarrass them.

The book also give hints of what to do when the kid gets separated from the parents, this is important and useful because some kids will panic and cry their eyes out instead of seeking help.

I love the simple illustrations and the simple words used, though the rhyming could be better in some ways.

Kids react to Old School Gadgets - Hardware Zone Tech Awards 2015

During the recent March school holiday a family friend asked if we are interested to let our kids do a video interview where the kids will be shown some old school gadgets/items asked about their views on these gadgets.  Usually I will ask DinoBoy if he is interested to go but this one, I decided for him because it will be fun to see his reactions to some old school stuffs.

I did not prep DinoBoy about this, the only thing I told him a few days prior to that day was "I arranged for a video interview for you, nothing serious, just for fun.  There will be some gadgets from long ago which they will ask your opinion about it, you just say whatever that comes to your mind." he didn't protest, just asked what exactly are the gadgets which I replied that I am not sure, after that he just went "Okay, I can do that." and that's the end of it.

On that day, we went down with another friend and we were shown to a small room with simple set up, after getting the kids to relax and get acquainted with the 2 kor-kor (big brothers) the interview started.  It lasted for slightly more than half an hour for each kid, we had a good laugh at the unexpected things/answers the kids gave.

Here is the video interview with the 8 kids that was shown during the Hardware Zone Tech Awards 2015.  (Video link taken from Hardware Zone youtube channel)

PS : About the cassette tape with a whooping price tag of $3000, they did not show the part after DinoBoy said the price, according to him its an antique so it cost that much now.

Overall it was a fun experience for DinoBoy. as you can see from the video he's got great imagination and very creative on his answers that leads him (and the other kids) to say the darndest things! A friend who was at the Tech Awards recognized DinoBoy and told me about it, she said he gave "memorable answers".  So, after watching that video....

What's on your mind Baby~

A Night of Magic at Raffles with Joe Labero and Burnt Out Punks

Besides those magic show I watched during kiddies party or some events, I have always watched those magic shows by magic masters like David Copperfield on the tv, never have had the chance to watch it live, with the magician doing the tricks right in front of me.  Imagine my excitement when an invitation was extended to the DinoFamily to watch a magic show by 4th time Merlin Award winner Joe Labero, we of course accepted the invitation gladly!

However, as the day for the show draws closer we were informed that the 3pm show was cancelled due to some technical faults, so we have to go for a later show at 730pm.  On that night, the small theater (or ball room, since its held at Raffles Hotel) was packed full with people.  I think they were trying to accommodate as many people from the earlier 3pm show as additional rows of chairs were added at the back of the theater, with many chairs added at the end of each row of seats.

Despite the *blocked views and having to stare at the tv screens up at the wall most of the time, we truly enjoyed the whole show!  The wittiness and sense of humour of Joe Labero with his magnificent illusion, the spectacular performance by the fire artists - Burnt Out Punks makes it a night to remember, many a times we were left in awe, dumbfounded and wowed after each tricks.  My jaws literally dropped when I saw a pair of beautiful long legs walked out onto the stage, we can't see any upper body on top of these legs!  Besides the usual "cut the man and move his body parts around", in this case it's Animal, tricks there are many many unbelievable ones such as walking through the body of the beautiful Elin, walking into the mirror and many many more.  I'm not going to let the cat out of the bag any more.

We also love the solo fiery performance by the Burnt Out Punks duo where they swallow, swing, throw balls of fire while doing difficult and dangerous acts with great agility (no safety harness attached too!).  You've seen these on tv but its a different feeling when you see them do this in front of you, it was breath taking!

At the end of the show there is a standing ovation as expected because Joe Labero's performance is just too amazing!  We didn't want to leave our seats after the great magician disappeared, we were half expecting him to come back from some where.  Oh well, he is gone for good, ok ok not for good but instead to outside of the theater to get ready to meet & greet all his fans!

We would very much love to have a little chat and a photo with the great magician himself but the queue was so long!  Nevertheless, we were happy to took a photo with the Burnt Out Punks, they were so friendly and not as scary as we have seen them on stage.  DinoBoy saw the right bandage on Animal's hand and asked him about it.  Animal said he got injured when he was rehearsing the act earlier.  Wow, it is DEFINITELY danger acts they are doing, we were glad that he was ok.

DinoBoy with Animal and beautiful Elin

Having entertained millions of people with a number of sold out tours to his name, I strongly suggest that you quickly buy your tickets to watch Joe Labero and be enthralled with his illusions, magic and comedy.

“My belief is that, as an artist, you cannot really ever be completely satisfied. There are always things that can be improved... I believe in constantly striving, looking and preparing for the next big step. It ́s an evolution in learning.” - Joe Labero

* A Little Flaw in a Perfect Night
I was initially not very happy with it, so here is my little rant about it. Well, my excitement for the show was immediately snubbed half when I collected our tickets, we were given seats that was far back to the side.  Since we were invited to watch and review the show I would have thought we will be getting seats with better view so that I can be immersed in all the actions which would have enable me to write a better blog post later.  Ok, never mind that, I told myself to enjoy it as much as possible.  And as people started to fill up the seat, DinoBoy's view was blocked and all he could see were the back of many heads.  Yes there were booster seats available but they were not the usual ones you see in theater or cinema, they were more like those padded cushion you buy to put on your office chair.  So what do this Mama do?  I went to grab another 2 more cushions and we have a happy DinoBoy but a not so happy person behind him (Sorry friend at the back!).

I've voiced my concerns in an email to the PR company who were apologetic and really nice to offer us tickets to watch the show again but we declined because we like to let others have chances to watch this great performance.

Nonetheless!!! This does not prevent us from sharing with all of you~ Come come, try your luck to win one of the 3 sets of 4 tickets to A Night of Magic at Raffles with Joe Labero in our giveaway!

Singa and the Kindness Cubbies Live!

Those born in the 70s & 80s will know Singa the Lion very well, during my younger days he was a big icon and almost every school kids are his fans.  I remember that I drew many pictures of him, entered into my primary school's courtesy drawing contests; and won some, had erasers, rulers, pencil cases with him printed onto it which I treasured much back then.  One of the best memory I have is the campaign song, what I call the Courtesy Song but it's official song title is Make Courtesy Our Way Of Life. I can even remember and sing the lyrics, and believe it or not it is these words that makes me insist that DinoBoy learn and knows all the respectful and good manners.

For those who are not familiar with Singa the Lion was the mascot for our country's National Courtesy Campaign that was launched in 1979, a move to encourage us to be kind and considerate with each other.  You can read more about Singa and the campaign here and here.

Anyway, DinoBoy first saw Singa about 4 years ago when we were walking along a pathway in Dhoby Ghaut Green.  Singa was sitting on a marbled chair looking sad, lonely and a little bit dirty, but I was happy to see him there, I eagerly introduced him to DinoBoy.  Told him loads of things about "Mama's favourite mascot", his absorbs as much as he could into his little brain but did not want to take a photo with Singa because "he's dirty Mum."  *sigh*  Needless to say I was heart broken, not because of what DinoBoy said but because for every thing Singa represents, here he is being left alone, vandalized no doubt and without friends.

When DinoBoy enters into Primary school I caught glimpse of Singa from the things he brought back, like newsletters, bookmark etc.  I was pretty excited when I know that Singa is coming to a mall in our neighbourhood and he's bringing 4 cubbies too!  I know I just have meet Singa and so off I went with DinoBoy on tow to see my favourite macot.

Singa with Kindness Cubbies Tosh, Sher, Kalle and Tomeo
Us with Sher & Tomeo
We joined the many other kids and adults in singing and dancing with Singa and the Kindness Cubbies.  What happened in Kindsville when the Cubbies think that the 5 magic words are useless and decided to stop using them?  Find out the answer by heading down to the next 2 malls (details at the end of the post).

Besides the live show, there are 3 booths; Love Letters, Word Scramble and Kindness! Spot it!, all packed with games and activities where the kids can enjoy. I can vouch that the Love Letters booth is the favourite among the kids because they get to write and post a letter all by themselves~

Sending a Love Letter to Mummy~

Naturally New Zealand exhibition at Changi Airport

A few weeks ago, we were invited to Changi Airport to take an epic trip to Middle Earth but was unable to share our experience earlier as we joined the rest in the National Mourning for the lost of our founding father of modern Singapore Mr Lee Kuan Yew (1923 - 2015).  We thought we would disappoint our readers when we shared our post now whenr the event has ended on 5th April 2015 but lo and behold!  It's extended till 19 April 2015!

The Naturally New Zealand exhibition features two facets of exhilarating New Zealand - Middle-earth and the modern New Zealand.

Fans of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit Trilogies can explore the Hobbit Holte, meet Gandalf the Grey as he stands guard over The One Ring and learn about the various scenic terrains that make up The Shire, Erebor and Bobbiton Woods.

Having created the first Hobbit Hole in London specifically for the world premiere of the final film in The Hobbit Trilogies in December 2014, the one you see here is the second authentic version out of Matamata.

Click here to watch how the Hobbit Hole was built in 10 days, featuring more than 40 types of plants & real props from the Hobbiton!

On the other side you can enjoy snippet of modern New Zealand where popular sports such as rugby, golf and cycling are featured.

We had a great time hitting some golf balls at the mini golf range.  There are some stuffs we did there too but did not manage to take a photo because we were just too busy exploring!

Be sure to head down to Changi Airport, level 2 of Terminal 3 to explore a little bit of New Zealand and redeem exclusive souvenirs.

I'm sure you will be thrilled that the year 2015 is significant for New Zealand and Singapore as the two nations commemorate 50 years of diplomatic relations and the return of Air New Zealand to the direct route.  So, check out the exciting travel offers at the travel booths there and plan for your next holiday with the family!

Here are some of the more exciting things you have to do when you are at the Naturally New Zealand exhibition.

Get Active, Get Healthy with Cold Storage Kids Run 2015

Well, I'm not a very lay back Mum even though I play badminton with the boy frequently I do not like to do any sports, not even running (except for running for the bus occasionally), I was telling a girl friend just the other day "I don't like to run, if I run all my fats in my body will protest." However, that does not stop me from letting the boy has any chance to enjoy the outdoor and sports so I am signing him up for the Cold Storage Kids Run 2015.

Home Cooked Meals #3 - Tomato Rice

It's been quite a while since I last cook a proper meal on weekday, yesterday I thought I'll try to whip up something from the things in my fridge.  It wasn't difficult, with a bit of cheating no doubt and an hour plus later we were sitting down having a hot home cooked dinner, here are the dishes.

Doesn't my tomato rice looks delish?  I am salivating, remembering the texture and taste of the rice even when I am writing about it now.  I only put in tomato and corn in my rice, there are people who put in diced/sliced mushrooms, crab stick, some diced marinated chicken/pork etc, and make it into a one pot dish.  I learn how to make this tomato rice by watching the video by ochikeron, I love ALL her video, they are shoot in bright areas with nice soothing soft music in the background, her instructions are clear and she try to show all the steps involved in it.  I first watched her video in 2013 and baked a Kasutera (Castella Sponge Cake) in my rice cooker.

Ok so here is the cheating part... Since I decided during the day that I will cook dinner that night there were no soup to go with the rice, which is kinda unacceptable for me coz I love soup!  So while in the supermarket gathering the veggie and the tomato, I went off to the soup section intending to grab a can of Campbell soup.  However, something else caught my eye, this packet of instant miso soup!  Took me about 10mins to decide whether to get this or not because I was skeptical whether there will really be tofu in it as stated in the package.  If its all sale gimmick than it will be a waste of my almost $6 for 8 packet of instant miso soup.  I decided to take my chance and I'm glad that I did.  Looking at the photo above you can see that there are really tofu cubes in it.  The soup is not too salty and I added some more seaweed because we love them lots in our miso soup.

And the boy's satisfying look and non stop compliments on the food AND  my cooking is all I need to feel that all these last minute meal planning and cooking are all worth it!
