Colorful Candy Canes

Renee posted this photo on her FB, such a vibrant colors!  These are the ones that I prefer as oppose to the ones that I always see from my neighbourhood shop; instead of the hook at one end, they simply twist it into a knot which 1) I can't hang it at any where and 2) I'd probably cut myself when I handle it as sometimes they do not trim the bamboo properly.

I show DinoEgg this photo and in my "high pitched & very excited" voice that never fails to makes him think that I've got some thing special for him, told him to "Look! Look!  Mummy buy this for you ok?  Choose the color!"  He went wide eyed & wide grin on the face when he heard "but this for you", eagerly look at the photo, turn to look at me still with wide grin but with a spark of worry in his eyes.  "Ahh???  Its CANE.... I don't want..." he said softly.  I continued to tease him, asking him which is his favourite color; Pink, Orange, Blue, Green or Yellow.  He looked at me, gave me a solemn look and then say calmly "I would prefer you not to ask me to choose a color."

Woah!  He clearly likes the cane NOT!  This is of course my doing, our doing.  Both me and daddy are very old school, we believe we must use some form of physical abuse pain in order to make the kids learn, of course we'd rather not use it however being a difficult toddler as he was we have no choice but to have this as a permanent display in our house.

I grew up having to taste this very frequently, all thanks to my stubbornness & hot temper, I was always the one challenging the Disciplinary Master aka Mum and thus I suffer.  Of course I bear grudges against her for all these beatings and scolding at that time but as I grow older and become wiser I starts to appreciate her teachings & beatings disciplining, especially so when I first stepped into the working society.  She made me a better person, to be able to see & judge people & situations better so that I will not fall onto the wrong side of the fence.  I may not be the daughter that my Mum wants me to turn out to be (one who is superb in her studies, graduate from U, become a "more useful person"), I may have veer off the road at some point of my life but eventually I'm back on the road walking beside her and recently adding a fiesty grandson to gives her more headaches n joy *chuckles*

Anyway that was then, now its the new era, others will frown and condemn you if they know that you are laying our hands or cane on your child.  There are still parents who uses the cane but most of them probably just wave it in front of their child threatening to use it on them.  For us, we usually use it to punish our furniture, yupe you read it right, our bed, sofa, floor, walls, cupboards suffers the most.  Other times we will only give him 1 or 2 hard and painful one on the back of the thigh so that he remembers the pain and the next time he misbehave when I say I will "invite Mr Cane out", he immediately becomes an angel.  I can count with 1 hand the number of times where I really whack him hard with the cane when he was younger.  There was once he kicked my Mum when he does not want her to do something for him (forgot what it was).  And the time where despite me saying "No, you can't go to the playground." he shakes free of my hand (he was taught NEVER to let go of my hand when we are out) almost immediately, ignoring me and flies off to the playground.  Happily climbing up the steps, sliding down the slides for a full 10mins before looking for me.  Oh did I mention that it was drizzling too?  Another time was when he punched his classmate on the stomach, almost fainted when the teacher told me that.

Mr Cane has left our house some 3 years ago.  I'm glad I invited it to stay at our house 5 years ago, he has done his job well.  Of course I have other help too on taming this little monster but that's to be shared at some other time.  Yeah, I'm a Modern Old School Mum who teaches my son to be a respectable person who respects others by using the tools & methods from both era.  You may not like my way of teaching but its ok, we are entitled to have our own views n stand.

    1. I guess as the kids gets older they are more willing to accepts our reasoning & explaining so don't need us to use "force" to make them understand :)

  4. Did I mention my cane went missing? The kids found out where it was hidden - on top of our tv and I underestimated them. Till today, don't know where it went. :p

  5. We too have many canes in the house- even one in the car. I recently purchased another 4 when we were in Taiwan earlier this year. Do you know that the balloon sticks from the balloons that they give out in swensons make excellent "canes" also :P

    1. Dominique, why buy fm Taiwan? Special designs? I don't dare to use the balloon stick coz it will inflict more pain then the cane even if u whack it lightly. I know my strength, I cannot control it so better not use it.
