The Buzz

"Mysteries of the Grand Canyon is educational, exciting, and entertaining all rolled into one. Marie Von Minden gives readers a fascinating glimpse into the canyon's past as well as the creatures that still call the Grand Canyon home. The interactive function allows for further learning and the brilliant photos visually stimulate children and help instill the knowledge found within the story." I highly recommend picking up a copy of Mysteries of the Grand Canyon." ~ BeachBoundBooks

"A must have experience for young people. With its cute, intelligent looking dog, and a bird that looks like it was conceived by Dr. Seuss, it puts us into an animal society - so beautifully conceived in its civility, generosity, and interest and care for the world - that it is reminescent of books like Winnie the Pooh. These elements, set in the grandeur of the Grand Canyon, beautifully brought out by magnificent photographs and videos, make it a compelling book from both parents' and teachers' points of view. ~ Mr. Naturally, iBookstore Review

"Overall, this iBook provides a great introduction to the Grand Canyon to children who are about to visit it or who just want to learn more about this important National Park. It includes lots of beautiful photographs, the story is engaging and there is a huge wealth of information included. I found it a great opportunity to talk about the Grand Canyon with my son, and tell him about my own experiences visiting the park and hiking into the crater. I also really enjoyed learning about the California Condor and all the effort that has gone into the Recovery Program; it provided a great opportunity to talk about Endangered Species and our responsibility to help preserve them." ~ iMum

"More than just a story, the book has incredible imagery that appears to lift off the page – a true photographic journey." ~ Mom's Lifesavers

"Readers of all ages will enjoy this engaging story to discover one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World at the Grand Canyon National Park. This photographically rich and entertaining ebook is especially appropriate for 7-11 year olds and as a read aloud for younger children, and it would also be well suited for an educational setting." ~ The Appy Ladies

"As a teacher, I am grateful to use this amazing book with my class! My students loved learning about the Grand Canyon from precious Kristi Kay's point of view, and they were excited to participate in the interactive aspects of the book; they didn't want to put it down!" ~ A. Gillette, iBookstore Review

About the Author: Marie von Minden

Would you like to live each day surrounded by unsurpassed beauty and deeply connected to nature? Marie finds it hard to believe, but this is now her lifestyle and she wants to share it through her photography and stories.

Marie von Minden was born and raised in Poland. She immigrated to Canada in 1982 and in 1999 she and her husband relocated to the United States. Like many Europeans, she was overwhelmed by the vastness and the beauty of North America and she developed a passion for landscape photography.

They began camping in the wilderness and connecting with nature on weekends and holidays, first in a tent and later in a cap-over camper. It was during those camping trips that a dream of full-time traveling and living in an RV evolved. In 2002 that dream became reality and they have been traveling in a 34 foot Airstream trailer ever since. America’s National Parks continue to be one of their favorite places to visit.

When Kristi Kay, a Cairn Terrier, joined them, the idea of a children’s book series about America’s National Parks as seen through Kristi Kay’s eyes grew as a natural extension of their lifestyle and love of nature. Through interactive adventure stories enhanced by photography selected from her vast photographic library, animation, sounds, videos, and unique graphics Marie hopes to express her gratitude for what has become her home, and to help cultivate appreciation and stewardship of these precious resources.

Fiddler in the family

*ALERT*
Proud Mama Post

DinoBoy started to learn violin on 12 April 2014 and I am very proud of him today because just slightly more than 2 months into it I think he is progressing well. This is the 3rd time he is playing this simple piece and is a great improvement from last lesson where he was playing on 2 strings on some notes.

I know we have to do a lot of practice for violin but so far we have only practiced the basic "doggie doggie jump jump" tune and the the finger exercise twice before I have to give it up because we always end up arguing, from the way he holds the bow to the pressure used while pulling the bow.  The boy always insist that he played it correctly and got upset when I correct his mistake.  A simple 15 mins of practice never fails to turn into 30mins and with both of us huffing in anger & frustration at each other.

If you are wondering why this video was taken in a sneakingly way, that's because I have banned myself from joining in the lesson as I've realized that my presence makes DinoBoy nervous, causing him to become very tensed up and unable to perform well in class.  Plus, being a somewhat perfectionist I tends to correct him even if the teacher did not say anything.  If he sees me or knows that I am taking a video I can guarantee you that it will be a different video.  So yeah, I kicked myself out for the sake of every one's sanity hahaha~

In the future, I hope he can play the violin as well as his uncle and cousin, then we will have a mini fiddler performance in the house~

Positive Focus - "I am a Positive Child!"

Earlier this year in February, having exhausted my methods and ideas  to try to make DinoBoy control his sudden temper outbursts in school, I was at my wit's end feeling vexed and troubled.  I was surfing the net, trying to look for some more ways to help us when I chanced upon Positive Focus.  While reading about their Positive Kids® program this caught my attention;

"Learn emotional management tools to help them understand and manage anger, fears, frustrations and disappointments."

Their tagline "Nuturing Positive Habits That Lasts A Lifetime!" intrigued me to want to learn more from them.

I contacted Positive Focus, spoke to them to understand more about their program and decided to sign DinoBoy up for their March 2014 Holiday camp.  He was only able to attend 2 out of the 4 days camp as he had a busy March holiday schedule.  It was supposed to be a drop-off camp but I made a special request to join in as I am interested to know more about Positive Focus.  The 3 hour long workshop was packed full of fun and laughter, we jived and danced to happy tunes, we had maximum fun and I was dead tired at the end of it!

First Day of Positive Me Camp - "The star in me! Discover your strengths and shine like a bright star!", the kids were taught to identify their strengths and ways to overcome their fear(s).  The Camp Leader Ms Hasnah, or "Miss Has" as she is fondly known by the kids, did a great job in engaging the kids and throughout the 3 hours the kids had maximum fun while learning ways to overcome their personal challenges.

I learned a new technique too that day and has been using it since, it is more effective then constant reminders of "Don't shout." "Lower your voice please".  At the beginning of the workshop Miss Has told the kids that it is a small room and there are 10 of them, so they should try not to shout out loud especially when they are feeling excitement, instead the kids should use their "Projection Voice".  What is a "Projection Voice" you may ask.  Well imagine shouting has a level 5 volume, tune it down to perhaps level 2 or 3 and it become "Projection Voice".  It is loud enough to let everyone hear you but it does not hurt their ears.  It's a simple instruction but the amazing thing is the kids understand it and reminded each other by saying out loud in harmony "Projection Voice!" when one of them suddenly shout out very loudly.  Cool right?

I really like the vibes in the room, every one was watching out for each other and gave huge encouragements to the shy and timid ones when they were asked to do a solo dance move or even a short catwalk.  They gave loud cheers when some one accomplished a task on their own.

At the end of the workshop the kids were asked to list down their strengths.  I was anxious to see what DinoBoy will list out and was happy when I saw his list, he truly is a boy who has all these traits.  I understand why he wrote "sometimes kind" in the list, he is referring to the incidents where he was too overwhelmed by his emotions and let it out on his classmates and teachers with his shouting and destructive behavior.  I am glad that he recognized that his actions during those explosive times are not acceptable and he is trying hard to control them.

Second Day of Positive Me Camp - "I am a survivor!" has activities and games to help build confidence in the kids.

I did not stay for the camp but it was obvious DinoBoy had tremendous fun as he was all pumped up with excitement.  He met me with a big smile and can't wait to tell me what he had done.  Ms Has shared an activity the kids did; they were supposed to go to one of the neighbour's office, introduce themselves, asked a person's name and get a name card from that person.  The kids had a choice of going in pairs or going alone, all of them bravely choose to go alone.

She further shared with me that DinoBoy walked into an office confidently, did a 90 deg bow (wow~), said a loud "Good Morning Sir!" and did a self introduction plus the purpose of his visit.  He got the person's name and one of his name card effortlessly.  Well, that's my boy~  He was never stranger shy since he was a toddler and has never been afraid to go up to anyone to start a conversation with them.

I look at the worksheet he brought back and was surprised to see that he penned down "be patient" under the I Can section.  I must agree that his level of patience is low, most of the time he couldn't wait for his turn to do things or speak to the teacher and that's when he started to raise his voice or show disrespect to them which usually will escalate to him blowing his top.  Now I know that he actually understands that being patient with himself, his friends, his teachers and every one else is something that he has to take control of.

Take a look at the following video taken during the March 2014 Positive Focus Camp, you can see how the workshop is usually being conducted.  (Video taken with permission from Positive Focus facebook page)

Everybody can combine their strengths, Mind & Body are always One - DinoBoy

DinoBoy has these to add - I like Positive Focus camp because I get to do fun & enjoyable activities, I learned to be positive and not to get angry easily.  When I am getting angry I can calm myself down by taking deep breaths and also by thinking positive thoughts,  (I asked him "What are the positive thoughts?")  such as putting ice on myself to cool down the anger and stress that I have.  I like to move around when I sit down on the floor -in the classroom- now I think I can sit down quietly with the half lotus position.

Overall I am very satisfied with the Positive Me Camp, the kids definitely gained some useful techniques and had a better understanding of themselves; I know DinoBoy did!  I have taught DinoBoy some of the breathing & calm down methods, told him a million times to ignore what the others said but he always fail to do it.  I believe by hearing it from some one else and discussing the various challenging situations in the class helps him to understand that it is possible to change the way he feels and think when he is so overwhelmed with emotions.

I also like the idea of using yoga in the classes as I believe yoga helps improve the level of  concentration and the rhythmic, focused breathing also helps sooth the mind and lower stress levels.

Some time in April; about a month after DinoBoy attended the camp, I spoke to and received good feedback from his teachers in school and student care centre.  They told me that though there were a few episodes that he got mad, started to breathe angrily and heavily, he was able to calm himself down without exploding.  And till date his outbursts are once or twice a month, it is a great improvement from 2-3 times a week.

We actually planned to go for their June 2014 Holiday Camp but I was unable to take leave for that week.  We will most definitely go for their September 2014 Holiday Camp!!!

*** *** ***

The Positive Me Camp runs for 4 days with different theme each day which are not related and not a continuation of the previous day's lesson so your child can either attend all 4 days; which I highly recommend, or choose the day(s) which you think your child will benefit most from.

"The Positive Me Camp offers many innovative experiences for children to learn how to tap into their creativity while getting to know themselves and others. Through, creative drama & dances, children are encouraged to find and express their authentic voices and self-expression. This provides opportunities for them to gain a sense of accomplishment and a feeling of success, which promotes positive self-esteem. Through Positive Psychology, NLP, Kids Yoga, a system of mind & body exercises, children learn very important life skills like how to be calm as well as how to deal with frustrations and anxiety and the ability to concentrate for longer periods of time."

Positive Focus also holds weekly classes from infants at 4 months old to kids at 12 years old.  If you think Positive Focus is able to help your child in any way give them a call to find out more about their program and weekly class schedule.  Besides that, Positive Focus also conduct parents/teachers workshop and private coaching sessions too.  Their June 2014 free trial class is ending soon but they will be having a 50% trial class promotion @ 50% when you sign up in the month of July and August 2014.

Narrated Video of How Andrew Got His Spots

My Review

A colorful rhyming book about Andrew, a baby giraffe who finally got his spots.  This book is great for kids who are just starting out to read on their own as the words are simple, the rhyming makes reading fun too.  I think its more suitable for 4 to 5 years old, older kids may think this is too "kiddish" and easy since they should be starting to read chapter books at that age.

I'm a visual person thus a little bit particular about illustrations and drawings so this is purely from my perspective.  I do not quite like the book's illustration because the animals does not look proportionate to me.  For example the first drawing of the leopard, the tail is too long, the next drawing shows the leopard with a head that is too small.  Andrew has different looks on every page of the book, I personally feel that main characters should have a distinctive look and it should stay the same throughout the whole book.  I am sure the illustrator is able to keep that distinctive look even if he is drawing free hand instead of using a software.

Seeing the illustration, it got me curious so I goggled on the illustrator Julie Sneeden, I like her portraits and landscape paintings better.  I especially like her Trellised Garden Walkway painting, makes me want to stroll through the garden and sit by the fountain.

About the Author: Louise Lintvelt

I am from South Africa and I live in a city called Pretoria. I am a Chemical Engineer by day and a children’s book writer by night. I am married to a wonderful man and we have a beautiful two year old daughter called Allegra. I love writing stories for my daughter, who is a constant inspiration.

I have always loved reading. My childhood was filled with books and you would often find me crouched the corner of my room devouring the pages of my favourite book. I lived for Tuesday mornings as this would bring with it the excitement of a trip to the local library for story hour and the opportunity to take home a new book. I was the local librarian’s worst nightmare. I would arrive a few minutes early to check that she had not mistakenly chosen a book that had already been read in story hour.

I was a very bossy three year old with an insatiable appetite for books! This has not really changed much in the last twenty seven years. Dr. Seuss was my absolute favourite and to say that my copy of One, Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish Blue Fish was well read would be an understatement.

When it comes to writing, my daughter is my biggest inspiration. I love seeing her face light up with excitement when we sit down to read a book before bedtime. My daughter was fascinated by giraffes after we went on a safari trip in late 2012. This planted the seed for my picture book called How Andrew Got His Spots which is a rhyming adaptation of a story I originally wrote in the third grade. My daughter has since grown into a healthy two year old with a passion for aircraft which was the inspiration for writing Goodnight, Sleep tight, What a Wonderful Flight.

I am sure that there are many parents in the world (myself included), who are quite decidedly sick and tired of reading the same favourite picture book night after night. I believe that the words of Oscar Wilde best describe how children should feel about picture books when he said, If one cannot enjoy reading a book over and over again, there is no use in reading it at all.

Happy Reading!

After Work Hours - FTWM Style

Last year I shared my thoughts on being and remaining a Full Time Working Mum or FTWM after DinoBoy was born.  Today I will let you peek into the stuffs I do after I knock off from work.

I am very blessed to be working in a company that is pro-family, this means that I am able to knock off work on the dot.  It also means that when I am away from the office either on medical leave, on leave for holiday or to take care of the boy when he is unwell, the office will not call me constantly.  They will try to solve any issues themselves and if there is really a need they will send me a text/wassapp to ask me for help.  I can declare loudly that my bosses (all 7 of them!) are wonderful and supportive!

I used to have After Work Happy Hours where I get to do a little bit of shopping, have dinner dates with girlfriends as I could rely on my Mum to help me fetch DinoBoy from school.  Since Mum left us last November my priorities and routine changed, no more gatherings and it's straight to the school to fetch DinoBoy from student care centre.  Luckily I have a great friend to help me.  Her girl is studying in the same school and student care as DinoBoy, she has been helping me to fetch the boy for me.  Not only that, she also brings him to dinner first while I made my way down to meet them.  This means that I do not have to rush to catch the train to try to fetch the boy before 7pm.

On days that I feel like cooking dinner, I will try to get it ready as fast as I cook.  With practice and of course with some useful kitchen gadgets plus early preparation dinner is usually done in under 30mins, such as this miso soup noodle with crab sticks, fish wanton, carrots, meat, Pikachu fishcakes and seaweed.  I simply adores one pot dish which we can have them as dinner for 2 days in a row or simple one dish meal that takes about 15 minutes to get it done.

We usually reach home around 8pm and immediately start our night routine.  We have about 2.5 hours before we turn in for the night.

First on the list is 30 - 45 mins of revision according to our timetable.  We started this since DinoBoy entered primary 1 last year but was not consistent, I decided to enforce it so that it becomes a habit, it can also ensure that he is able to tackle the current subjects effortlessly.  Next year Science will be an additional subject he will have to study, even though DinoBoy is very interested in Science and we have been doing a little bit of Science experiments I think we still have to spend some time on this subject.  Both of us do not like Revision Time but we also know that it is necessary.  Most of the time I will sit down with him to supervise him but sometimes I will leave him to put some laundry to wash, work on my blog posts or prepare the food for next day's dinner.

Revision ends at around 9.15pm, its time to get ready for bed. DinoBoy can choose to read or we could play board games.  On Fridays I allow him to do both, which usually will make him very happy, sometimes he will be too excited to go to bed at the usual bed time but I am ok since next day is Saturday.

I can guarantee you that our Game Time is NOT like this!  It is always fun game of the dreadful Snake & Ladders, Ludo, Ducks in a Row, Reversi, Chinese chess.  We just started this new game; Secret Code and DinoBoy is still trying to learn the rules of the game.  He got confused with the red & yellow clues and was trying real hard to concentrate so that he can figure them out.

Bed time is at 10.30pm, both for me and DinoBoy.  HOORAY!!!!  Now you will say that I am one of the few lucky mummy who gets to sleep so early.  Truth is I can't keep my eyes open after that, sometimes I fall asleep at 9.30pm.  Some days I wish I can stay up late to do my stuffs but no such luck.  I wakes up at 5.30am every morning, this is a habit which I can't seems to get rid of, that perhaps explains why I am so tired at the end of the day.

I must say since the birth of DinoBoy, minus the "I stayed up late after my child is asleep" part, my after work routine is almost the same.  I still get my 8 hours of sleep which does not seems to be ever enough, some days I wake up feeling tired and wish its weekend.

With only 2.5hours on weekdays, there isn't much fun and interesting things I can do with DinoBoy.  We have a No Screen Time Rule on weekdays so I have to engage DinoBoy in some other ways, the reading and board games helps a lot, besides being bonding time for us it also creates a stress free nights which is great for winding down and prepare for bed.

So there you have it, my After Work Hours.  Is your after work hours same as mine or perhaps you can spot yours in one of the other 21 FTWM's after work hours.

My Review

The rustic illustrations is something I don't usually see in children's book, especially if the book is for 3-4 years old.  They probably prefer more cartoon-liked illustrations with vibrant colors that will capture their attention.  Having said that I like the illustrations, I'm a vision-creature so this type of illustrations will appeal to me so I guess there will be children who likes it too.  Though the recommended age for this book is till 8 years old I think it is more suitable for younger children.  I like the way the author describe the 5 aircrafts, by using simple words she manages to introduce them to the young readers.  I can see young aircrafts enthusiastic kids with their aircraft models, flying them around while reading the book or parents extending their interest to other aircrafts with other books or perhaps a lap book with more aircrafts.

The Buzz

“An entertaining fantasy with a quirky, inventive storyline that shows how things invariably turn out badly for bullies.” Kirkus Reviews

“The book is going to be devoured by readers of any type, whether they're looking for some fun fiction, a comical read, or a page-turner.” 5 Star Review, San Francisco Book Review

"Fynn's book reminded me a bit of Harry Potter, but he adds his own cast of characters and a boy (Iggy), fun dialogue, and an amazing story that you can't help but root for. If you are looking for a great book to get your kids hooked on, then I recommend the Prince Iggy series." 5 Star Review, The Pen and Muse Book Reviews, Amazon

“Has the flavor of a Dickens and a Harry Potter story while remaining wholly original. It just shares those characteristics that make it such an enjoyable read. This book should be on every child's must read list and if I'm to be perfectly honest it should be on every adults list too. It has enough subtle adult humor well within its boundaries to make it an entertaining read for the parents too. It certainly has a modern message. It shows just how heartbreaking bullying can be by children as well as adults. It's a story about losing yourself and finding yourself. It shows being a bully doesn't pay off but believing in yourself does." 5 Star Review, April S., Amazon

Fighting Flu & Cough with Young Living essential oil

This has been the 2nd time in about 7 months that I am down with serious flu and cough. It is really annoying because I can't breathe, I sneeze constantly, the outside of the nostril is itchy, nose is dripping, the throat is scratchy and painful.  One word to describe my feeling - miserable with a capital M.

Since my early twenties I have an issue with taking medicine, I do not like the taste of the tablet/pill/capsule nor their after effect into my system.  For years I have endured flu, cough, sore throat attacks with no medicine and letting my body heal itself.  It was not a pleasant experience.  Period.

I have started to use Young Living essential oils last year and I am having better "sick days".  When I am down with flu and cough (they do really come visiting hand in hand) I've got these oil to the rescue - Breathe Again, Lavender, Peppermint, Eucalyptus Blue & R.C.

I started feeling under the weather on Thursday afternoon, I immediately applied Eucalyptus Blue on my naval and nostril the minute I reached home.  For the past 3 days I put my diffuser to work full time even when I'm sleeping, diffusing a blend of the above oils.  When I am out I brought along Breathe Again, swiping it across my nostril and roll it on my naval to makes me breathe easier and reduce my coughing.

Today is Sunday and I woke up feeling GREAT!  No more dripping nose, sore & scratchy throat, nose is still a little bit blocked and am still coughing occasionally but I am definitely feeling better than before.  Best part is I got better without taking any medicine!

On top of the oil I am keeping myself hydrate with lemon infused water, I drink it chilled to sooth the sore throat.  DinoPapa and I has started to drink infused water, they taste better and has lesser sugar than store bought juices or carbonated soft drink.

If you would like to know more about Young Living essential oil, drop me a mail at jennlimbh(at)gmail(dot)com, I'll be more than happy to share their benefits and show you the road to better living and healing the body without the use of medicine.
